The Climb: Documentary about Canadian 1982 Everest expedition airs February 28th on CBC's Doc Zone

(MountEverest.net) Early October last year, a debate erupted in Canada on whether or not the country's first Everest summit was cool. Following the 1982 expedition, Messner - with his trademark generosity - reportedly said the climb accomplished “nothing new and nothing special.”
Pat Morrow (one of the summiteers) told the Vancouver Sun, “It’s not something we should be proud of as Canadians. We put Canadians on the summit, but not by an unclimbed route.”
Hillary's, Messner's and other early pioneers' climbs didn't exactly make the mountain smaller though and Everest in 1982 was a very different story from the prepared slopes found there today. Following two accidents in which 4 people died, the climbers were forced to build a funeral pyre using wood from the valley below.
Other Canadians disagreed with the critics, pointing out that the expedition was an inspiration to other Canadian climbers, who went on and did tougher climbs on the peak.
Judge for yourself: THE CLIMB is airing on the CBC's Doc Zone on February 28th @ 9:00pm.
This documentary about the 1982 Canadian expedition to climb Mount Everest, follows the principal climbers back to base camp in March 2006 to reflect on the triumph and tragedy. The Climb is a co-production with Nomad Films and Screen Door.
