Pakistan wrap-up: Nanga Parbat SUMMIT by Iran
Posted: Jul 17, 2008 11:20 am EDT
(K2Climb.net) Nanga Parbat summit by Iranians, pushes on Gasherbrum, no news yet on Broad Peak but ExWeb's interview with Dodo Kopold is in the pipe - check in later this morning for it.
Nanga Parbat - Iran on top!
"5 Iranian climbers managed to stand on top of Nanga Parbat," reported Minoo Zabetian this morning in a very excited, short message to ExWeb. The climbers reportedly reached the summit at 4 pm, "CONGRATULATION to all climbers around the world!" Minoo added!
This is the first Iranian expedition led by a woman and also the first to have a sponsor. Joining Kazem and Leyla in this the first Iranian attempt on Nanga Parbat are Hosein Abolhasani, Sahand Aghdai, Saman Nemati, Mohammad Norouzi and Ehsan Partoee.
While Kazem is back in Pakistan for his third time (except for K2 he also climbed Broad Peak's fore summit); Nanga marks the first 8000+ experience for the other mountaineers in this team. The expedition is outfitted by ATP and climbs the normal route.
The sponsoring Narvan Arra association and its partner the Bosch Rexroth Group hopes the expedition will raise global awareness about the disaster of Karun; one of Iran's mighty rivers. The river stretches about 960 km out of which about 400 km have been polluted.
A Narvan Arra representative accompanying the expedition told Karrar Haidri that the company owner is a mountaineer himself who climbed all peaks in Iran and Narvan Arra thus plans to sponsor more expeditions to Pakistan 8000ers in the future.
Gasherbrum 2
"Looks like things are not quite over yet!" reports Stu from FTA. "Francois, Jean Rene and Ashgar have headed back up and reached C4 along with Nacho and are headed for a summit attempt tomorrow."
"Quick whereabouts up date: Chris is with Fred, Surech and Taqui in BC and awaiting the summit attempt news. Andy and Clare departed with our local guide Fida and will rejoin the team in Skardu. Mark made it safely back to Islamabad and already is in Bangkok trying to get his flight home.
Broad Peak - pushes last night
Several summit pushes were ongoing last night, including by Joao Garcia. No news yet of results.
