P50 smart battery will power your laptop from solar but has to be protected on the ice...
HumanEdgeTech proudly presents: P50 - the missing link

(HumanEdgeTech) HET is exactly what the name says - technology for people living on the edge. Now guess their most common question?

Forget the extremes - for a long time, people have begged our team, "how do I charge my laptop from a solar panel?"

Gap closed

In a recent editorial, PC Mag wrote that tech today is sold for style, not function, and except for led lights there have been no real news for years. True or not, here's one gadget that should impress.

Let's start with the problem. Until now, it has been impossible to charge large devices such as laptops and BGANs straight from solar panels. Period.

Shady retailers have showed pics of imaginary systems in reality requiring monstrous arrays of solar panels at some point making overcharge a brand new problem. Not to mention the fact that a laptop needs steady current, while the sun fluctuates. It couldn't work and it didn't.

A real solution has been to add a battery between the device and the panel. Yet while lightweight batteries such as Lithium/Ion can be charged from a car or a wall, they can't charge from solar panels. In addition to poor temperature ratings and poor rough handling resistance; these chargers are therefore mainly used indoors or by business folks on travel.

Explorers have been left to lug around deep cycle led-acid batteries of the same type as used in cars, golf carts, and motorbikes. Heavy and big: the solution is not elegant and works basically only in a fixed BC. The battle between solar or generator has therefore been pretty even.

For truly unplugged trekkers, hikers and climbers the question remained sadly unanswered. Until now.

HET Power 50

Today, HET introduces to the expedition community for the first time in the world (as far as we know) a brand new Lithium technology.

The HET Power 50 is a Lithium/polymer battery. It is MUCH smaller and lighter than the deep cycle; it will charge all your devices including your laptop; and finally - it will recharge even from a small solar panel.

Lithium/polymer and Lithium/iron-phosphate are new, exciting technologies that will become important for electric cars. Lithium/polymer is slightly superior to Lithium/iron as the former is more lightweight, and thus HET's choice. But that's just the beginning of it.

The smartness of HET Power 50

HET Power 50 is the smartest battery on the market today, with almost unlimited versatility. Like many others, the battery can recharge from a wall (100-240AC) and your car. The biggest difference is that the P50 also recharges from solar power ranging from 1W to 100W! This offers great versatility and HET Power 50 is the only battery we have seen able to perform this.

Another important feature is that the battery comes with two charging ports.

One port is for large devices demanding lots of power such as laptops and BGANs. This port allows you to choose voltage power from 5-19 V, which is important as many computers require 16-19 Voltage for charging.

A battery with one single setting such as 14 Volt will eliminate most computers, or require expensive and complicated adapters. To our knowledge, HET Power 50 is the only battery on the market today with this voltage setting feature.

The second port allows charging over USB of smaller gadgets such as mobile phones, sat phones, iPods and other.

A complete package

Like most HET products, the Power 50 is a complete package: it comes with a female and a male car adapter. Plug in the male straight into your car, or straight to the solar panel. The female gives standard 12 V to charge any devices with car chargers.

If you don't have a car charger with your device, HET Power 50 also comes with 8 different adapter tips that will work with most major brands of computers. Other tips are available at a nominal $10 cost.

Charging BGANs often requires expensive and hard to find (if available at all) car chargers. Plugs are therefore already included with HET Power 50 for NERA, Wideye, Hughes, Iridium, Thuraya and other sat phones.

Other benefits

Other benefits are that the battery allows simultaneous tasks: it can be recharged from a solar panel while at the same time charging your devices.

Unlike other batteries which become weaker and stop charging in spite of having power left in them; HET Power 50 holds voltage all the way and will charge your devices until it completely runs out of juice. This makes for an efficient battery that doesn't have to be recharged as often.

And if you have tried to fly with a deep-cycle you'll appreciate this piece of news: HET Power 50 is small enough to fit in your pocket and approved carry on!

As for hours of charging power, below some examples to give you an idea:

Average Laptop: 4 hours
ASUS EEE: 7 hours
Average HD video camera: 15 hours
iPod: 50 hours
PDA: 20 hours

The above figures are for one unit; buy two HET Power 50 and double the times.

"The sexiest package in Himalaya" just got skinnier

The ultralight CONTACT high altitude package has been called "the sexiest package in Himalaya" and it just got skinnier.

Pack a Solar Blazt FEATHER high efficient thin-film panel, the smart HET Power 50 battery, a sat phone (all brands come with HET's famous service), your regular toys, a PDA or perhaps the tiny ASUS EEE full power computer.

You'll land on a few pounds of gear, you'll be totally green, and take the edge of tech work. Combined with the award-winning Contact 4.0 customized sat-blog software for easy uploads and eliminated handshakes, you'll also be saving on headaches and call costs.

HET Power 50 has taken years of research and months of customizing to make it into the unique product it is today. We expect it to become perhaps our biggest seller yet, but most of all - the battery is a mission accomplished - closing the final gap in CONTACT; the lightest satellite communications system out there.

Check out P50 here!

HET Power 50 is fairly resistant to rough handling and has decent cold ratings; storage/discharge -20C/4F, and +/- OC/34F for charge.

For this reason, we are still keeping our lightweight Nickel/Cadmium 2,5A battery for the poles. At -40C/F it is still the best solution for extreme cold and it will charge small devices including PDA's and ASUS EEE although unfortunately not a laptop.
