Czech Manaslu attempt kicking off
Posted: Nov 25, 2008 03:11 pm EST
(MountEverest.net) Up until now only half of all 14 eight-thousanders have been winter climbed. Polish climbers are the 8000+ winter kings, and they mean to claim the throne also this season - attempting no less than 2 ascents in Pakistan where all 8000ers still remain unclimbed in winter.
Outside Karakoram, Everest and Cho Oyu have been the most 'visited' in winter, while Dhaulagiri and Manaslu have 11 winter summits each.
A Czech trio now aims to plant the first Czech winter flag on Manaslu; although as they point out, "climbing is not the sole purpose of life for us, but a way to enrich it."
The three climbers have limited 8000+ experiences (G2 summit and partial Cho Oyu) but have cut their teeth in Pamir, the Alps, and on peaks such as Muztagh Ata and Denali.
The expedition cargo has already reached Nepal, and Sherpas are going to hit the road to Sama by the end of this month. The climbers plan to commence the expedition next week, Pavel Krupièka wrote in an email heads-up to ExWeb yesterday. His two mates are polar explorers/alpinists Jan Krabec and Milan Wlasák. Check in on the expedition website for updates in English.
As the Polish and Czech winter expeditions kick-off; popular re-runs will be published at ExWeb all week about winter climbing. The history, the classifications - and the BAD chart. We start today with the K2 series: Karakoram and ultimate winter challenges.
Enjoy - and Godspeed Mountaineers!
