Popular Re-run & ExWeb correction: ECUADORIAN Santiago Quintero

(MountEverest.net) It's clear that folks in South America are very proud of their emerging mountaineers. Last week, ExWeb wrote that Santiago Quintero has set off on a crossing of 35 Andes summits in preps for K2 in May.

By mistake, we wrote that Santiago is Brazilian. We have since been litterally swamped by emails notifying that Santiago is from Ecuador!

The Iquito resident and mountain guide started to climb because he had found his joy and believes that we all should do what we desire. "I discovered the true purpose of my life in the mountains," he told ExWeb last year, "without them my eyes have no light."

10 years from now, Santiago told us he hopes to have actively helped in preserving this planet; bagged K2, "and live with Claudia (ed note: his girlfriend of 6 years) for the rest of my life."

And one more thing: "14x8000 my friend."

The correction, current climbs and upcoming K2 expedition all warrant a re-run of the interview ExWeb made with the mountaineer last spring.

In spite of extensive frostbite from an Aconcagua winter climb, Santiago summited Makalu without supplementary oxygen in a hairy and emotional ascent. Check out the debrief and ExWeb interview here.

“I have started a new project called "Extreme Andes: 35 mountains in 60 days”,” Santiago Quintero, 34, told ExplorersWeb last week. “In order to chain-climb these 35 peaks, I am climbing approximately 40,000 vertical meters and trekking a total of 1200 km across eight Ecuadorian provinces.”

“Some of the mountains take 3-4 four days walking in order to reach their summit, such as Sangay, Cerro Hermoso, Sarahurco,or Achipungo,” Santiago wrote.

“Some others include IV/V degree climbing pitches, such as El Altar, Quilindaña, Quispicacha, etc. Finally, some other targeted peaks are over 5,000 meters tall, such as Iliniza Sur (5326 m), Iliniza Norte (5116 m), Cotopaxi (5897 m), Cayambe (5790 m), Antisana ( 5704 m), the Carihuairazo (5200 m), Altar (5400 m), Sangay (5320 m). The project will end on the summit of Chimborazo (6310 m.).”
