Newsflash: Piotr Morawski lost on Dhaulagiri

(MountEverest.net/Madrid. Story updated 7:05 am CDT) Polish ace climber Piotr Morawski has perished on Dhaulagiri, local media have just reported.

The accident occurred today at 8.40am, local time. Piotr was reportedly on his way back from C2 when he fell in a crevasse at 5,500 meters (below C1).

There were two other Polish expeditions on the mountain: one led by Anna Czerwiñska, and a team launched by the Polish Tatra Rescuers Association. The Tatra Rescuers team’s Doctor, Roman Mazik, confirmed Piotr Morawski’s death after his body was recovered from the crevasse, media reported.

Morawski was climbing together with Slovak Peter Hamor. The "Two Peters" hoped to summit Dhaulagiri via its normal route, as a preparatory climb before attempting a new route on Manaslu's west face.

The Polish Mountaineering Association has released the news today - details are still sketchy though.

Piotr Morawski (33) had summited six 8000ers, including the first winter summit on Shisha Pangma.
