ExWeb Interview with Gerfried Göschl, final: Family matters

Posted: May 14, 2009 12:59 pm EDT
(Mounteverest.net/K2Climb.net) He got married to his Heike just this past Sunday on the summit of a mountain near their home in Styria, Austria.

It was a small, civil marriage with Günther Unterberger as witness. A big church ceremony with families and lots of friends is scheduled for September 5, "therefore it’s important to catch my flight back home on August 23d :-)" Gerfried reckons.

In this final part of the interview, Austrian Gerfried Göschl speaks about his tight-knit family, their projects and the future.

ExplorersWeb: Your dad Rainer, along with Rudolph Pischinger and Hanns Schell (G1, Nanga Parbat Schell route, G2 and Shisha Pangma) climbed Diran in 1968, with your dad the first to summit the mountain. Is there a lot of climbing talk around your dinner table at family reunions?

Gerfried: We are three brothers and in a mountain rescue team with our dad, so we always talk about mountains at home. We discuss both my climbing plans and our humanitarian aid projects in Pakistan. Hanns Schell is like an uncle to me and I try to meet or call him as often as possible.

ExplorersWeb: Does your dad harass you with tales of "it was harder then"? :) Does your older brother Rainer Wolfgang still climb?

Gerfried: It’s I who bore them with questions. As an alpine historian I often ask my dad, Hanns and other old veterans about their stories. My older brother is doing less big climbs these days but he is always training. He might join me for an adventure in Nepal in 2011.

ExplorersWeb: Your family is helping people in Pakistan. Your parents, Rainer and Katharina Göschl, were on Shandur top at the time of the big earthquake and later distributed thousand of pounds of gear and first aid to around 20,000 people with your younger brother Sieghard. Together with the owner of Besham Continental Hotel (who donated land valued at two million) you planned to build a Primary school in the region. How did that go?

Gerfried: The school was opened one year ago. It has 140 students, about half are girls. To us this was a must; it's not common for girls to get an education in Pakistan so we insisted on it. There are plenty of things to do still; (a sanitary facility etc), and we need more money, but we are proud of OUR school.

ExplorersWeb: Any personal motto?

Gerfried: Work hard and never give up to make your dreams come through. With consistency, motivation and passion you can reach all goals, even the highest ones!!

ExplorersWeb: What would be your dream climb?

Gerfried: Aaah, always the next mountain :-) But in fact a new route on a 8000er!!

ExplorersWeb: Any top mountaineers you admire?

Gerfried: Simone Moro, Denis Urubko, Valery Babanov, Louis, Günther, Jorge and of course as an Austrian: Gerlinde :-)

ExplorersWeb: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Gerfried: Leading special expeditions for friends in winter or on new routes. But also still doing some expeditions on normal routes. One day I will come back for Everest south side; and an interesting project is waiting for me on the north side.

As a teacher I’ll try some education initiatives in Pakistan. And maybe I can persuade my very good friend MD Markus Grasl to organize one of his eye-camps in Pakistan (he already made many such in Africa and Nepal). Enough to do for the next 30 years :-)))

Gerfried Göschl, 36, is a math- and history teacher. He's also a rock and ice climbing instructor, experiential educator, lecturer, expedition organizer and motivational speaker. Beside his family and mountaineering; chess is a big hobby.

His latest read books were Simone Moro´s "8000 metri di vita" and Messners latest book: "Although I´m not a fan of Messner, this book is worth having because of the genius pictures of Nanga Parbat," Gerfried says.

His favo movie is Benjamin Button and he likes a good mix of music, especially Metallica and Guns’n’ Roses.
As for food, Gerfried says he likes everything that tastes good, but it must be healthy and, "with less alcohol in the last months before departure :-)."
