Everest wrap-up: tsunami of summits on Thursday - Apa's 19th, Viesturs' O2 heads-up and Fiennes goes live over Contact 4.0

(MountEverest.net) Russians, Indians, Croatians, Brits, Canadians…seems the entire world stood on top of itself this third day of the Everest summit week.

Among them, British polar farer Ran Fiennes whose summit pic was sent live over Contact 4.0 by summit mates Yuri and Laura.

Apa Sherpa summited for the 19th time, and pictures show Ed Viesturs decided to climb on O2 after all, perhaps due to the weather induced lag on South Col.

South side Thursday’s summit wave

“Insane crowds - is the word of the day,” reported Peak Freaks yesterday. “Tim said there were no less than 150 climbers on the route going up. Is going to be really crazy up there for the next wave.” And so it was: today’s summit wave on Everest might be the biggest yet this season.

Yuri, Laura - and the secret Everest man

“Cumbre! (summit),” wrote Yuri and Laura’s home team in Capital letters. The Mexican climbers summited today at 5:00am, local time. They were not alone though: “We’ve had a climbing mate we were not allowed to speak about unless he summited," Yuri dispatched over Contact 4.0.

Since the secret eventually stood on top today, his name was finally revealed. It’s no other than (Sir) Ran Fiennes. “BBC crew asked us to shoot some pics of him and to send them then over on the same day,” Yuri reported and used Contact 4.0 for the task. In a few minutes, Ran’s name passed to headlines in worldwide media.

Viesturs: With or without O2?

Ed Viesturs team reported last month he'd try to summit without oxygen. However, the team's summit images show Ed wearing an oxygen mask. The prolonged stay at South Col possibly forced the climber to reconsider. A report straight from the team is expected soon.

Meanwhile, Dave Hahn and his clients left BC for C2 yesterday, hoping to reach the top on May 24th.

Apa Sherpa’s 19th Everest summit

“Apa Sherpa has just broken his own world record to stand on the top of Mt. Everest for the 19th time,” Eco-Everest team leader Dawa Steven reported today.

"I am at the top and am looking at all the prayer flags,” Apa reported over the radio. “I have just satisfied the deities and placed the Bhumpa on the summit...I am the last of our group to get to the top today since I was delayed at the Hillary Step because there are so many people here. I arrived at 8am and have been here for 30 minutes.”

More for Abramov’s team

“The second group in 7Summits Club, led by legendary Russian Climber Nicholay Cherny has summited Everest today,” the team posted earlier today.

The summiteers’ names are:
SINGH Patrick Rajnaraine (Canada)
HANNA Lynne (Great Britain)
HANNA Noel Richmond (Great Britain)
Nikolay Cherny (Russia) - guide
Maksim Bogatirev (Russia) - guide

Update on previous days’ summits

Croatian sisters, Sherpa brothers

“A first group with two members of Croatian female expedition, sisters Darija and Iris Bostjanèiã reached the summit of Mt. Everest May 19th, at 9:40am, local time,” Croatian team leader Darko Berljak reported. “This made them first women on the top this year, but also the first sisters to summit Everest together. Moreover, they were climbing together with 2 Sherpa brothers: Lhakpa and Navang.”

Word from Arun Treks, Ballinger, Bate

“Gaurav Sharma of Rajasthan, India & Sherpas Lhakpa Rangdu and Pemba topped-out on May 20th at 6.45 am,” Arun Treks reported.

“This is Lhakpa’s fifth Everest summit and Pemba’s first 8000er,” they added.

“9 climbers, 3 guides and 12 Sherpa from our team made it to the top of the world,” Andrian Ballinger ported on his website. “The fastest were there by 6am May 21st local, with all the others achieving it over the next couple of hours.” Adrian is guiding with HiMex, whose members were apparently divided into several summit groups.

Gavin Bate, hoping to summit on May 19th, had to turn around at 8,500m as his O2 mask froze up.
