Himalaya wrap-up: Nepali K2 heroes bag a double together; Cho Oyu summits, Dhaula skiers stuck in snow

(MountEverest.net) Remember Pasang, cousin of the Bhote brothers, and Chhiring Dorje Sherpa from K2 last year? According to American sources, they recently summitted Makalu and Lhotse together without the use of supplemental oxygen.

In other news: Dan Mazur’s team summited Cho Oyu yesterday in high winds while Dhaulagiri skiers Louis and Rupert have been stuck in BC for three days.

Expedition Sherpa for the Korean (including Go Min-Sun) 2008 K2 team Pasang Lama, read more in ExWeb's Best of 2008 Award and the only summiteer of the K2 2008 American/International expedition Chhiring Dorje Sherpa summited K2 together last year.

According to an email this morning from Amanda Padoan in San Diego, of The Mountain Fund - Pasang Lama and Chhiring Dorje Sherpa recently summitted Makalu and Lhotse on May 2nd and 22nd without the use of supplemental oxygen. Summit photos are expected after the 27th, "...they are in Namche right now drinking some well-deserved beer," Amanda explained. Find more info here. The last climb reportedly became Chhiring's 20th 8000er!

After K2 last year, Chhiring told ExWeb in "an alternative route could save future lives on K2", that on his future K2 climbs, he will avoid the Bottleneck by using the route from 8000 meter to the South Rock Face, which is only 500 meter and will reduce casualties. "This route will be difficult the first time, but easy for followers if properly fixed," Chhiring said.

The Mountain Fund has since set up a gerard-mcdonnell-memorial-fund together with the family.

Cho Oyu: SummitClimb success

“It’s Sunday at 3:30 in the afternoon and we’re on the summit of Cho Oyu,” Dan Mazur reported yesterday. “It’s very windy up here and we can see Everest, so that’s how we know we’re on the summit. We can look out and see the Tibetan plateau.”

Dan’s team hoped to return back to C3 for the night.

Dhaulagiri

Louis Stitzinger and Rupert have been trying to leave Dhaulagiri’s BC for the last three days, and all times they were rejected back down due to heavy snowfall. Their BC dome-tent almost collapsed in the morning today due to loads of fresh snow weighing on it. However, the climbers reported sun and clear skies in the afternoon.

Shisha Pangma: expedition postponed – until fall?

The Romanian expedition to Shisha’ SW Face is not happening right now,” Rodrigo Granzotto told ExplorersWeb. “The expedition is scheduled for 17 September, according to the team’s website.” The climb was originally planned for this spring.
