Pakistan wrap-up: 14x8000ers racers gearing up for K2, Nanga and GI

(K2Climb.net) A number of high altitude mountaineers are ready to tick off some of their last 14x8000ers in Pakistan this summer.
Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Joao Garcia hope to turn K2 and Nanga Parbat, respectively, into their lucky 13th, while South Korean 8000er female racer Oh Eun-sun is going for Nanga and GI.
K2: Gerlinde for her lucky 13th
After Lhotse, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner has little time to rest and prepare for K2. Next week she’ll fly to Pakistan, hoping to turn Chogori into her lucky 13th 8000er. “I am so thankful for all the emails I’ve got,” she reported yesterday. “I am flying to Islamabad mid next week though, so I’m afraid I won’t have time to answer them all.”
Joao Garcia: Keeping the blood thick
Portuguese Joao Garcia - also with 12x8000ers bagged - won't stay long in Lisbon. “I am travelling to Pakistan in three weeks time,” he said after coming home from Manaslu. While in Portugal, Joao will try to stay acclimatized by sleeping in a hypobaric chamber he has had installed in his bedroom.
Nanga+GI: Oh Eun-sun
South Korean Oh Eun-sun, 43, summited Dhaulagiri on May 21, Korea Times stated. “She was confirmed to have stood at the top without oxygen,'' outfitter Kang Tae-seon told the newspaper. Kang also claimed Miss Oh used no O2 to summit Kangchenjunga 15 days before.
The claim is proving controversial though. Spanish Edurne Pasaban, in a high camp on Kang at the time, confirmed the Korean’s summit, but using gas. “Oh was climbing on O2 and heavily supported by a huge team," Edurne said.
Eun-sun plans to attempt Nanga Parbat and Hidden Peak (GI) in the next two months. Should she succeed, she will attempt her claimed last 8000er – Annapurna - in fall this year.
Broad Peak: BC rest
While most team prepare to leave next week Eli Revol, Ludo Giambasi and Antoine Giraud are resting in Broad Peak’s BC after two partial trips up the mountain.
Eelco Jansen: Off on Saturday
The French climbers won’t be alone for long though. “Frank Felder, Heinz Queck, Leo Cantaluppi, Geert Kalusche, Jonas Ruch, Cindy Niedermair and Eelco Jansen are departing from Munich towards Islamabad on Saturday at noon,” Eelco’s home site reported. Jansen’s team is also aiming for Broad Peak.
