Pakistan wrap-up: search on Latok 1; Iran about GII; new route abandoned on BP
Posted: Aug 11, 2009 09:54 am EST
(K2Climb.net) Two HAPs and American Fabrizio Zangrilli aero-searched Latok I today and were thereafter dropped in BC by the helicopter to try and approach Oscar on foot tomorrow. Due to low visibility, no visual contact was made. Five Spanish climbers are reportedly enroute to Pakistan to try and help Oscar Perez as well.
In other news: with enough baggage of trouble from home already, Iranian climbers have provided details on Gasherbrum II, while their counterparts on Broad Peak SW have abandoned the new route.
There are summit pics from Korean Miss Oh, and word on Brazilian climbers in full pursuit of the Snow Leopard.
Gasherbrum II: Iran sounds off
Leader of the Tehran Gasherbrum II expedition Kaveh Kashefi has posted at Iranian Mountainzone a short response (previously also written from Skardu on July 24th) to comments made by Spanish and Portuguese climbers on the peak.
Kashefi confirms his team had to turn back in bad weather close to the summit due to a big cornice that had accumulated prior to July 20th. Kashefi adds that according to Polish Jacek Teler, Spanish Louis Barbero stepped on this cornice and vanished that evening.
As for the trash, the expedition leader says that his team collected all but 90 kg, which was stored in camp 1 and later picked up by four hired Pakistani porters. Read the full report at IMZ. Check the site also for a summit push report with images.
Broad Peak: new route abandoned in C3
In the team's second attempt, the Arash Mountaineers managed to set up C3 on Broad's SW side, reported Iranian MountainZone. The camp shares spot with the normal route from where a summit push will take place, weather allowing. Due to insufficient gear and lack of time, the remains of the new route will have to wait for another time.
Korea: Miss Oh coming home - before Annapurna in September?
Korean female climber Eun-Sun Oh, "Miss Oh" is due to arrive Korea Wednesday, reported ExWeb's correspondent Kyu Dam Lee. Miss Oh plans to attempt Annapurna (her 14th 8000er) this September with members of the Female Alpine Club of Korea in memory of Hyun-Ok Ji, the first woman Korean Everest summiteer who later perished on Annapurna.
The final schedule is to be decided by Miss Oh, sponsor Black Yak and the female alpine club.
Brazil in Kazakstan
Extremos.com.br sent word that Brazilian climbers Irivan Burda and Waldemar Niclevicz are in Kazakhstan in pursuit of the Snow Leopard. They summited Khan Tengri (7,010m), their second of the five needed, on August 2. The climbers reported cold wind and heavy snowfall; next is peak Pobeda (7,439m). Check Extremos for updates (links section).
