Himalaya wrap-up: Pauner injured in a fall on Shisha
Posted: Sep 14, 2009 12:33 pm EST
(MountEverest.net) Spanish Carlos Pauner was injured in a fall on Shisha Pangma yesterday and may have broken ribs.
Meanwhile, the Basque Everest team is on the normal route scouting conditions on the Hornbein Couloir.
Shisha Pangma
Carlos Pauner called home over sat-phone yesterday reporting that he had taken a fall on the way to C1. “Juanito and Tolo were climbing above me – they still don’t know what happened,” Carlos said.
“He's not seriously injured, but in deep pain,” Pauner’s home team reported. “Time will tell if he’ll be forced back home.”
SummitClimb’s Dan mazur also reported on the incident. “About 9:45 a.m., a member of a neighboring team walked into camp to say their team member was injured - we went over to check it out and found him laying against a boulder in the team's adjoining ABC,” Dan wrote.
“Apparently he had been walking, carrying a fully loaded rucksack, along the Shisha Pangma glacier-moraine trail when he came upon one of the many loose sections, stumbled and fell, striking his side hard against a large sharp boulder. He said he heard a crack as he landed. We examined him and he seemed to have quite a bit of pain in his side and said that he felt a "clicking" each time he attempted to breath. He said whenever he coughed he had severe pain, but was not coughing up blood, nor did he have any blood in his urine.”
“We assumed a broken rib and urged an immediate evacuation, because he was still able to walk,” Mazur explained. “He said he wanted to wait until he was really sure his ribs were broken, before going down. He said that climbing Shishapangma was the most important thing in the world to him and he was holding out hope that there might be some way he could recover.”
Meanwhile, Kinga Baranowska left Nyalam towards Shisha’s Chinese BC yesterday. “I’ve got a great climbing partner: Australian Andrew Lock,” the Polish climber noted. “We are climbing Shisha’s northern side, following Iñaki Ochoa’s traverse from the upper sections to the main summit - conditions permitting.”
Andrew Lock hopes to complete his 14x8000ers project on Shisha, which would be Kinga’s 7th.
Everest
Juan Vallejo and Mikel Zabalza moved to Everest’s normal route BC last Thursday. “We want to climb up the normal route and spend two nights at 6,500m. That way we will improve our acclimatization, and will also check conditions on the Hornbein Couloir,” the team stated.
Manaslu
Altitude Junkies’ climbers went on a day trip carrying loads to C1. Next move will depend on weather forecasts and conditions, currently being checked by some guides in HiMex expedition. Meanwhile, today was Puja-day for Mexican Badia and Mauricio, and the Chilean team.
Cho Oyu
Mario Merelli is in C1 while IMG’s, Malta’s Challenge8000 and Jagged-globe’s teams are back from a first trip to C1 – while Mario Merelli reached the spot earlier today, and Alpine Ascents will follow tomorrow.
“After some rest days the aim is to return to C1 for a couple of nights then on to sleep at C2 before returning to ABC again,” Jagged-globe crew stated. “Then, after further rest, we'd be ready for a summit attempt.”
