Norwegian mountaineer Sven Gangdal dies in boating accident
Posted: Sep 17, 2009 02:55 pm EST
(MountEverest.net) Himalayan climber Norwegian Sven Gangdal died in a boating accident on the night of September 13, local media reports. Sven was alone in a small motor boat which ran at high speed into a cliff.
Sven Gangdal had climbed five 8000ers and was twin brother of Jon Gangdal. Sven scaled Everest in 1996 in an international expedition led by Jon, becoming the first Norwegian to climb Everest from its north side.
The two brothers often climbed together: in 1999 they managed to summit two 8000ers (Shisha Pangma and Cho Oyu) in only three weeks. This spring, Jon Gangdal became the first Norwegian to scale Kangchenjunga.
It's yet unclear what exactly caused Sunday's boating accident.
