Brenda Walsh summits Everest at 3.00 am!
Posted: May 19, 2006 05:23 pm EST
Greg from the team just shot over a quick heads up that American Brenda Walsh, climbing on the IMG permit, has summited from the south with sherpas Danuru and Mingma. Details will be posted right away on Brenda's blog verascapes.com and should also be on IMG's website soon. If correct, this is by far the earliest summit of the season, if not ever: At 3 in the morning it's pitch black in Himalaya.
In an earlier entry on the blog today, Greg (Brenda's partner) reported that Brenda left on her summit bid at about 8:45 or 9 p.m. from Camp 4. Erin Simonson of IMG talked to Mark Tucker, who reported that Brenda was moving very fast and strong, and had made the South Summit of Mount Everest at 2 a.m!
Apparently, she climbed from Camp 4 in about 6 hours, and summited around 3 a.m. Now heading down, Brenda decided to not wait for sunrise (hours away) but instead to shoot some pretty rare moonlit pictures from Everest summit.
Brenda, a climbing guide for 9 years is working for International Mountain Guides on this Everest trip. She has 94 ascents of Mount Rainier and a number of expeditions to Mount McKinley, Mexico, Ecuador and Mt. Whitney, California. She has also ascended the Grand Teton and Mont Blanc, plus numerous Cascade ascents.
