Surfing the never-ending wave: Geraldine Fasnacht BASE jumping Antarctica and more
Posted: Mar 22, 2012 08:12 pm EDT (Newsdesk) She-gliders are rare species but here's one: Swiss born Geraldine Fasnacht flies down mountains on her snowboard or in wingsuit. She has been BASE jumping off cliff and mountains for the past 10 years, including Broad Peak - on Baffin Island that is.
Geraldine sent over some news to ExplorersWeb about two documentaries portraying her extreme flying adventures. See also dates and places for screenings and presentations on her website.
The documentary below is about her 2009 BASE jump expedition in Queen Maud Land with Sébastien Collomb-Gros, Sam Beaugey and Manu Pellissier.
The other documentary, One Step Beyond, portrays her rollercoaster ride across the full spectrum of human emotions during her extreme adventures.
Géraldine Fasnacht grew up in the Swiss mountains. She started skiing at age 2 and switched to snowboarding at 10, then started climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Eventually she started skydiving. After 300 jumps she decided to go for BASE jumping and discovered the wing suit.
As professional snowboarder Geraldine won the most prestigious world Freeride event, Verbier Xtreme three times. The snowboard made her want to really discover mountains, she says on her website. “It's like surfing a wave infinite. Happiness for me is to draw lines on the mountains that attract me, the great outdoors, the freedom.”
Flying is part of her life, says one of her sponsors.”She is one of the pioneers of the wing suit, developing new wing designs and pushing the discipline not only in terms of performance but in terms of territory as well. During an expedition on Baffin Island she did manage with a group of guides, BASE jumpers and mountain experts to be the first to jump off five cliffs including the 1770-meter Broad Peak, the highest cliff ever jumped.”
On December 13, 2009 she and Sam Beaugey, Sébastien Collomb-Gros and Manu Pellissier BASE jumped in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. #Air #Polar #Mountaineering #topstory
