Everest summit picture mystery: See...who...at the top?
Posted: Aug 03, 2005 05:08 pm EDT
Byron Smith has made quite a name for himself at ExWeb. In the fall of 2003, he sneaked under the radar and climbed Carstensz Pyramid’s with the help of locals, and happily detailed his ‘Indiana Jones’ adventure on the Internet. All of the Army guys and the guide who helped him were easily recognized from the article, according to them. Word spread and soon all permits for CP were canceled, leaving a number of very angry people - and climbers.
One image, two climbers
This time around, readers have pointed ExWeb to a discrepancy in Byron’s summit images from Everest. The readers don't want to flash their names either; "Byron Smith has threatened law suits to anyone that gets in this way." That's bad Byron - but could this one be an honest mistake?
The picture in case can be found in the "See you at the top" Press Kit section of the web for Byron Smith where he has video showing a person dressed in red with a radio on the summit of Everest announcing to the world that "I can't go any further. I am on top of the world" followed by the overlay caption "Byron Smith Successful Summit, May 21, 2000."
On another website, this same person, now a Dane dressed in red with a radio, is broadcasting from the summit on May 20, 2000, the day before Byron summited. The Danish still photos appear to be taken from the same video tape that Byron is using on his web site. Caption in Danish: Mads on the walkie-talkie with the words "I can't go any higher."
Find both websites in the links section. If anyone can solve this mystery - mail us!
ExWeb tried to reach the Danes whose expedition mail bounced back, and has received no reply from Byron Smith.
