K2 breaking news: Kazakhs back in BC!
Posted: Aug 17, 2005 12:49 pm EDT
The great news has just come through Sportpiac, reported by MOL team leader, Hungarian Lajos Kollár.
"According to the latest news, the Kazakhs and the Polish climbers made it to BC. They are fine and safe, as far as it's possible. They are OK!
The 4 Kazakhs climbers reached 8400 meters before turning back. Most likely, this was the last push for this season."
More details soon!
The Kazakh team, plus Polish Anna Czerwinska and Darek Zaluski departed C4 (7700 m) on the Abruzzi Spur on Sunday at midnight for the summit of K2 (8611 m). Hungarian Eross Zsolt joined the push two hours later but turned back at 8200 m after ten hours climbing. Anna and Darek had turned back already earlier. Eross reported extremely slow progress due to high winds and, most of all, snow up to their waists.
The Kazakh Army' young guns on K2 are Maxut (Zhuma) Zhumayev (leader), Vassiliy (Vaso) Pivtsov (Maxut's regular climbing buddy who turned 30 today), Damir Molgachev and Serguey (Serg) Brodsky. Vassiliy turned 30 yesterday. They are all skilled climbers, well trained and extremely strong.
The Kazakh's are as usual coached by Ervand Iljinsky. The climbers are part of a national team of Kazakhstan climbers with the intent to summit all fourteen 8,000m peaks in time to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union, coming up in December 2006.
Veteran Anna Czerwinska and Darek Zaluski are also expert climbers. They have been on the mountain for two months and reached 8200m in a previous summit attempt.
The MOL Central Europe K2 expedition attempted the Abruzzi Spur route. Team members are Hungarians Lajos Kollár (leader), Katalin Csollány, Zsolt Erõss, Markos Huba, and László Mécs, Slovak Jaro Dutka, and Romanian Dan Borcea.
