Swiss K2 2015: From Swtizerland to Skardu in Mercedes-Benz

Posted: Jun 03, 2015 12:13 pm EDT

(By Raheel Adnan) Swiss K2 2015 team arrived in Skardu on May 30th, after a lengthy road-trip from Château-d’Oex, Swtizerland. Mike Horn, Fred Roux and Köbi Reichen traveled through 10 different countries (Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China) over the past two weeks to reach Pakistan from Chinese side. They had left the Swiss town on May 14th.

“Let’s just say it’s a challenging commute to work,” said Mike Horn at the start of journey. “I normally don’t use motorized vehicles on my adventures, but in this case, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class will allow me to discover the remote lands that I have not yet had the opportunity to explore. I am looking forward to witnessing the drastic changes in scenery and to meet locals and hear their stories along my journey.”

The team is currently in Skardu. They will drive further to Askole in coming days, and start the long walk to K2 Base Camp.

The Swiss trio had previously attempted K2 in summer 2013. Excessive snow didn’t let any climber reach the summit, that year. Mike Horn, Fred Roux and Köbi Reichen along with other climbers turned back from C2. Marty and Denali Schmidt pushed forward to C3, and were unfortunately swept away by an avalanche at night.

After a remarkably successful summer 2014, K2 will be the center of attention this year, again. At least two commercial expeditions and some smaller teams will be on the mountain. Apparently, the climbing action will be limited to normal route Abruzzi Spur (SE Ridge or SSE Ridge) on Pakistani side of the mountain.

Photos/videos from picturesque journey and detailed logs about the travel can be viewed on Mike’s Facebook Page and Map.
