ExplorersWeb week in review - March 23, 2003

Everest Base Camp clinic
- Luanne Freer and some of her clinic staff have gone through Namche Bazaar and are on their way up to base camp.

Ocean Rowing update -
Pacific ocean rower Andrew Halsey's last Argos update was on the 17th of March - the life-expectancy of Argos beacon 1 is over and we are waiting for Andy to activate his second beacon.  From his last position update on March 17th, it appears that Andy is still fighting hard, but rowing in circles.

Atlantic ocean rower Martin Wood is just 78 miles away from his goal of Barbados - icy Pina Coladas and warm, sandy beaches will be a fine reward. Meanwhile, Simon Chalk is plugging away at the oars in the Indian Ocean and has progressed 800 miles from the coast of Australia towards his goal of Reunion Island, just off of Madagascar's coast.

Everest 2003 - Teams are in motion.  Some expeditions are already in the Khumbu valley on the trek up to base camp, while others are in Kathmandu, and still some are just about to board planes bound for Nepal.

Dominick Arduin North Pole - The French Finn has been picked up by a helicopter and deposited 90 kilometers closer to the Pole.  Domi had been stranded on an ice floe and needed some help.  There has been no recent dispatch because poor weather has stymied her efforts to charge the satellite phone with the solar panels.

Altitude with Attitude - Six Swedes will be going for Dhaulagiri this spring. If they succeed, it will be the first time a Swede stands atop the 8000 meter peak..
