Everest is heating up - The season is on! Climbers on the South have reached Camp II and climbers on the North are fixing the route up to the North Col. This week marked the season's first fatality - a member of a French expedition on the south side was found dead on the morning of April 9th in his base camp tent. Some teams still have yet to arrive in base camp. Everest Base Camp Clinic - The doc is in! Luanne Freer and her crew had their hands full this past week. When they weren't interviewing climbers for research, they were tending to patients. Luanne and her crew received one patient who had taken a bad fall and was in severe respiratory distress - after being given intensive care he had to be evacuated by helicopter directly from base camp. The Polar race has started - Two teams have already made the first check point. The Initial Style team came in first followed by team Polar race. Team ViP3 and Extreme Steps are expected to arrive at the first check point tomorrow. Penn Hadow is making good progress towards the pole - He is skiing solo and unsupported to the North Pole and swam his first lead this week. Ocean Rowing update - Andrew Halsey is on land and in good health. That leaves Simon Chalk out there all by himself on the world's oceans. He has been pounded by storms on the Indian Ocean, but is making steady progress. North West passage skiers have completed the first leg of their journey and made Cambridge Bay. World's first video transmission from a North Pole expedition - The North Pole Challenge team armed with the Contact 2.0 expedition software were able to send the first ever live videos from the high-arctic.
