Earl de Blonville’s 2008 Greenland environment camp update: Project grows

(ThePoles.com) In 1986, Earl de Blonville was head of Australia’s first expedition to the Arctic. Some experts predict that climate change will make Australia the worst-affected country on Earth and Earl believes time has come for some radical action. Here goes an update on his project.

Earl's (former) Arctic Climate Change Expedition 2008, aims to develop a new generation of climate change leaders, educated in a remote area of Australia with some selected to check the reality of melting ice with their own eyes, in East Greenland by July 2008 when they will attend a training camp and cruise along the coast on Earl's 50’ exploring yacht.

On return, each Young Explorer will create a communications program for raising public awareness of climate change issues.

In his update, Earl wrote to ExWeb:

"The first change is our name, as per below. We have also stretched the program over two years, as per timetable."

"Year one will enable a bigger program for our nearly 1 million Year 9-12 students to get engaged. That will mean a whole range of action programs across the country to help serious students qualify for selection."

"We have received official endorsement from two governments and are talking with a third. The budget is now around AUD$ 6 million. This will be raised by 12 companies each sponsoring a team at $500k each."

"We will have a full blown recce in Greenland this year. This will enable representatives from all 12 sponsors to participate. One benefit is that those 12 become internal champions of climate change policy and carbon reduction programs."

"We will be filming the whole 2 year project and sponsors can each get their own focussed video."

The Greening of Australia has posted an interview with Earl on YouTube. This can be accessed by typing in his name on YT or through the project website: www.ArcticExplorer.net

Earl de Blonville led Australia’s first Arctic expedition in 1986. He has also explored half of Greenland’s navigable coast in his yacht and sea kayak. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, London, and has served as consultant to other Arctic and desert expeditions. He has led many expeditions, including scientific exploration, to mountain, desert and Arctic regions. Today, Earl is a senior executive leadership mentor and a writer.
