South Pole speed record attempt update: Todd closing in on Hannah
Posted: Dec 02, 2008 12:27 pm EST
(ThePoles.com) This season, two men planned an unsupported speed attempt to the South Pole of less than 40 days, chasing UK Hannah McKeand's fastest time from Hercules Inlet.
Ysetrady, UK Mark Langridge aborted his plan to also turn around at the South Pole and ski back without the use of kites. [Ed note Dec. 19, 2008 correction: Due to Mark’s heavier load, he is not attempting to beat the South Pole speed record.] American Todd Carmichael, back after last years attempt, is closest to Hannah at the moment.
Hannah was at 84.441 after 20 days, while yesterday Todd was only 9.95NM behind - equalling around 5 hours of skiing.
Check Todd's website for updates
Todd attempts to be the first American to cross Antarctica to the South Pole - alone, on foot and with no assistance - and a South Pole speed record.
