Young gun Alex Hibbert, 19, intends to guide an unsupported team of three to the South Pole in 2007. His experience is varied, and includes a completion of the 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Kayak Ultra-Marathon at the age of only 15.
Future Royal Marine Commando
Alex, a Biology Student at Oxford University has asked for a pre-release of his plans, "as the game of sponsor hunting is about to begin!!"
Alex passed preliminary tests for Royal Marines Commandos at age 16. He will be retested after expedition for entry in Autumn 2008.
The other members of the expedition are still unconfirmed. Around a dozen people will train on Dartmoor, UK this month so Alex can pick his team. "People applying have much experience, for example long periods in Norway, Northern Canada, Greenland and Iceland. Some also have military experience including Commando training in arctic conditions."
If successful, Alex will become the youngest Briton to make the South Pole unsupported by nearly a decade, the youngest Briton to make the Pole by two years - and the youngest SP unsupported expedition leader overall.
