Greg's list of USA registered nonprofits in Pakistan

Few westerners know rural Pakistan more intimately than Greg Mortenson. Since his 1993 climb on K2, Greg has established the Central Asia Institute and done over 30 trips to set up schools in remote mountain villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Two days back, we asked Greg to recommend nonprofits who he has seen working in the area. Here's from Greg:

What you dont see and seldom hear about

"We're receiving hundreds of calls and email from people wanting to help in Pakistan. People all over the world really do care, even though they have been rocked by all the catastrophic events of the last year."<cutoff>

"The TV news is mostly focused in the urban areas of Islamabad, Muzzafarabad, Balakot, and surrounding towns. What you dont see and seldom hear about are the hundreds of small villages in the rugged Karakoram and Hindu Kush mountains that have been buried in subsequent landslides, rockfall, mud, and torrents of water. Its will take weeks and months to ascertain the full impact of this catastrophic event in these remote areas."

Pakistan Army and Frontier Works Organization FWO

"I've compiled a list of a few USA registered nonprofits who we know or have seen working in the area. These organizations qualify for tax-deductible contributions. This list is not inclusive."

"By far the biggest, effective force to deliver relief, put in bridges and build roads, set up water systems and electricity is the Pakistan Army and also the Frontier Works Organization FWO (which builds and repairs roads), which is a paramilitary unit."

"Pakistan has over 100,000 troops already based in Azad Kashmir along the Line Of Control (LOC) war zone between India and Pakistan, and already has dispatched two more divisions (12,000 troops) to the area. Pakistans military are well disciplined, respected by the people, and many are from the affected areas."

Roads = Relief

"Media reports have sometimes criticized the Pakistan Army and the governments slow response, however, there is a massive effort by the Army and FWO to clear roads and open bridges to the area that are crucial to get any significant aid in at all. Roads = Relief. The storm and rains for the first three days after the earthquake, which slowed down helicopters and aircraft did not help the problem."

"It is important to note that in the last 15 years, over 65,000 civilians in the LOC areas were killed in the ongoing war and border dispute between India and Pakistan. Why is it that nothing was done politically in the last decade to address this human disaster?"

$10 or 20 goes a long ways

"With other recent disasters like Katrina, the Tsunami and ongoing war in Iraq, it is difficult for some to appreciate the immensity of this disaster. Even if you cannot contribute much, $ 10 or 20 goes a long ways. Please consider supporting any organization below, or others on the ground in Azad Kashmir. Please also take a few minutes to encourage your Senator or Congress Representative to act decisively and immediately provide Pakistan with significant funds to get the ball rolling before winter sets in."

"What is inspiring and amazing is that many of the people who were worst hit by the earthquake did not wait around for help to arrive. Despite the sight and stench of hundreds of dead bodies, a lack of medical supplies, no food or drinking water, they bravely began to shovel out debri themselves and carry heavy loads over mountain trails to get in relief supplies. Most survivors also continue to respect their holy Ramadhan season, and fast from around 4:20 a.m. to 7 p.m. This is the true essence of the human spirit to have faith, survive, and not give up in the face of adversity."

"Thanks for your prayers, interest and contributions which make a big difference."
