(By Correne Coetzer) The three Basque mountaineers, Alberto Inurrategi, Juan Vallejo and Mikel Zabalza, conquered the South Tower of Paiju Peak at about 6000m on July 26 (Day 33), and with that opened the route on the virgin tower, reported their home team to ExplorersWeb.
Zabalza called in, saying it was incredible, "It is the hardest route I made in my life.” They had very little battery left, just enough to say that it would be impossible to access the summit from where they were, because the conditions of the last few meters to the summit are "unworkable". Mikel added, ”It would be crazy.”
No further details of the route.
