Leven Brown, Ray Carroll, Don Lennox, and Livar Nysted, has just broken a 114 year record. They rowed from New York to the UK in 44 days.

The Artemis North Atlantic Challenge, skippered by Leven Brown, 37, from Edinburgh, crossed the finishing line at St Mary's Harbor, Scilly Isles on Saturday July 31st after nearly 44 days at sea.

The record they broke was set 114 years ago by two by two Norwegian men George Harbo and Frank Samuelson. They rowed from New York to the Scilly Isles in an open 18 skiff named The Fox in 55 days. Several attempts to break the record have been launched after 1896 without any luck. Until now.

The new record-holders are the Artemis North Atlantic Rowing Challenge team, which is Leven Brown, Ray Carroll, 33, from Galway, Don Lennox, 41, from Bellshill, Glasgow, and Livar Nysted, 39, from the Faroe Islands.

They knocked 11 days of the old record and used 43 days, 21 hours, 26 minutes and 48 seconds on the 2820 nautical miles.

- It's a great, great day. I'm very proud of the lads and everybody involved in the boat and proud of the boat, she's taken a hammering, Leven Brown said when finally arriving on the Scilly Isles

The four rowers have covered thousands of miles, together and alone, before the left New York and they are a very strong crew.

Leven Brown holds four world records and a number of firsts in Ocean Rowing in unsupported solo and team expeditions. He clocked up more than 10,000 rowing miles and spent in excess of 400 days at sea in rowing challenges. Ray Carrol has rowed since age 11 and competed for Ireland in a Junior World Championship, a European Championship and a World Student Games.

He was a member of the 2007-08 world record-breaking crew together with Brown and Lennox, when they smashed the Mid Atlantic crossing time in 33 days.

Lennox, the team medic, has three world records, has rowed more than 3,000 sea miles and previously competed with La Mondiale.

Nysted won the Faroe Island championship in rowing three times, in 2001, 2004 and 2007 and also previously rowed with La Mondiale on the Trade Winds expedition.
