Jose Mijares and dog, Lonchas: best friends on Spitsbergen

(By Correne Coetzer) This past Arctic Spring, José Mijares' aim was to experience the solitude and enjoy the landscape of Spitsbergen, the largest Island of the Svalbard archipelago. "No intention to set a record, or any other ridiculous thing, just a couple of weeks with my best friend, doing our best," he said to ExplorersWeb.

José, and his "best friend, dog Lonchas, were transferred by skidoo 165 km away from Longyearbyen, the biggest town on Svalbard, to the gates of the Spitsbergen South National Park, a place called, Ljosodden. From Ljosodden, José skied south to Hamberbukta. He said to ExplorersWeb, on the way Lonchas got a lot of scratches on his legs caused by the ice.  From Hamberbukta they turn back to Longyearbyen. "It was a short trip, just 250 km in 14 days, but alone, only with my dog."

The two were self-supported; both pulled their own sleds with food, fuel and equipment. He and Lonchas are equal, said José. “We both do our best, we carry our own gear, and we help each other – as in any other team.”

Svalbard is known for its high population of polar bears. José, born in Spain and residing in Norway, was well aware that they could come across these animals. "We met 2 polar bears, as you can see in my video blog."

The adventure was "not about speed, not about distance; It’s about endurance, about merging into the adventure and living the Arctic experience to its full,” José explained.
