This fall, NASA plans to sell off the shuttle fleet at $28.8 million apiece NYT reports.
The trouble is that you won't be able to do much with it. The shuttle is only built for space station altitude, and getting it ready for a surprise visit there will set you back one billion.
NYT writes that about 20 inquiries have been made so far, mostly by museums and schools. "The Discovery is already promised to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The Atlantis and the Endeavour are up for grabs," states the news report.
More interestingly, the main engines are free. Unable to collect even $400,000 for each, the engines are now available for the cost of transportation and handling.
